Maths is as easy as Pi for Dean Maguirc College students

March 14th (3-14) is known around the world as ‘PiDay’ in celebration of the formula relating a circles circumference to its diameter.

An enthusiastic group of Year 9 students from Dean Maguirc College, Carrickmore, participated in a 3.14 miles relay race, just over 5k, around the local hurling pitch, Páirc Éire Óg. Recording impressive times, students enjoyed the craic although some did admit that the distance felt like it was never-ending, just like the digits of pi!

During a well-deserved post-race celebration, pupils enjoyed pizza! Their Maths teacher, Máire McGinn, commented that, ‘one of the aims of the Maths Department at Dean Maguirc College is to ‘develop the pupils’ abilities to apply their Maths knowledge and skills to everyday situations around them’, to contextualise the learning and enable pupils to understand that they can experience both enjoyment and success in Maths’.
