Completion of refurbishment at Dean Maguirc College
A £500,000 refurbishment has taken place at Dean Maguirc College, Carrickmore which has resulted in the upgrading of the changing rooms/toilets as well as the cloakroom area of the school. It is another positive development for the college which continues to be oversubscribed annually. Commenting on this latest project for the school, the principal, Mr. James Warnock said “I am delighted to see the completion of the scheme which has given way to such enhanced facilities for the school, especially the P.E. department. The refurbished cloakroom area has added a new dimension to the school environment and I applaud the professional manner in which the work was carried out by the entire project team.’’
He added “Dean Maguirc College as you know has won various sporting titles over the years and one of my goals was that one day we would have modern changing facilities for our pupils who have played with such passion on the pitch. Of course it will also enhance the daily delivery of our physical education programme. Whilst part of the refurbished area will be out of use due to COVID–19, we look forward to a time that we can utilise such welcomed amenities.”

Dean Maguirc College applauds its G.C.S.E. pupils on their
academic success.
Pupils at Dean Maguirc College have been applauded on the results they have achieved at G.C.S.E. level during a year that saw the disruption of teaching and learning due to Covid 19 as well as Year 12 pupils not having the opportunity to sit their examinations at the end of Key Stage 4.
Whilst this year’s set of results were based on teacher grades, the principal, Mr. James Warnock said “it was the correct approach under the circumstances to use for the awarding of grades as the teachers are the experts and have the best knowledge of the pupils with regard to assessment and their ultimate attainment.”
He added “that much work had gone into finalising the predicted grades with the collation of the necessary evidence to support the outcomes, an assignment carried out by the teachers with integrity and professionalism.”
Mr. Warnock congratulated this cohort of pupils who had achieved the grades they deserved and wished them every success as they now progressed to their Post 16 studies at the ‘Dean’ or were transferring either to South West College, Omagh or Dungannon to embark on the next stage of their education.
The top achievers for 2020 at G.C.S.E. level were Conor McGarrity, Síofra Loughran, Jerome Cullen, Colleen Kelly, Anna Sweeney, Blaithnait Kerr, Aislinn Coyle, Eoin Conway, Caitlin Gormley, Niamh McElhone, David Morris, Clodagh McMenemy, Mary Gormley, Aimee Conlon, Pauriac McDonnell, Lorcan McGarrity, Alanna McGaughey, Shea Donaghy and Katie McMahon.

Big Breakfast
Saturday 29th Feb saw a large crowd come out and support our Senior Lady footballers as they hosted a Big Breakfast as part of their preparation for the All Ireland Semi Final.
U20 Ulster Champions
Dean girls win Ulster U20 title
The under 20C colleges game between Dean Maguirc College and Largy College took place on Thursday at the Bawnacre centre, Irvinestown.
The Dean girls had come through two very tough games to qualify for the final. They beat Virginia College Cavan in the quarter final by 1pt after extra time and then St. Louis, Ballymena in the semi-final by 1pt in a replay after extra-time. The girls had shown real character to come through these battles. However, the team had lost Claire McGarrity through injury.
Winning such games stood to them going into the final. In the first half the girls played against a strong wind. The Dean started off well and went 2 points up, however, Largy College took control of the game and took full advantage of the wind and went 2-2 to 4 points up after 15 minutes. Once again the Dean girls dug deep and started to crawl their way back into the game. Maeve McCrystal was very influential during this period and scored 1-3 to bring the girls back into the game.
The game flowed from end to end and at half time only a single point separated them. Dean 1-06 to Largy 2-04.
The wind had a bearing on the second half and Largy college found it increasingly difficult to work the ball out of their defence. The dean team became more confident and started to dominate the play. The addition of Meaghan Clarke coming on further boosted the dean with her ability to run at the Largy defence. This helped settle the team and through Caitlin Gormley and player of the match Mairead McGarrity began to take control of the game. A few excellent frees from Sorcha Gormley helped the Dean pull away from their opponents and a late goal from Clodagh Munroe sealed the title.
Overall it was an excellent team performance and the girls now go onto to represent the school in the All-Ireland series. The game finished Dean Maguirc College 2-19 to Largy College 2-06.

A Celebration Of Sporting Success
Dean Maguirc College recently hosted ‘A Celebration of Sporting Success’ which saw the school community and invited guests celebrate the school’s tremendous sporting achievement of 2018/19.
The pupils and teams recognised were Ulster and All Ireland Handballers, U14 Camogie Ulster Champions, U14 Ladies Football Ulster Champions, U15.5 McAvoy Cup,Ulster Champions and the U16.5 Rafferty Cup, Ulster Champions.
2018/19 marked a new high watermark in the school’s history with no fewer than 10 Ulster Titles and 1 All Ireland Title being brought back to the school.
Mr Gavan McElroy who compered the evening commented “I think we will all agree that the Dean’s sporting success is fast becoming central to what we are about in our school. Its value in the development of the whole person cannot be underestimated – It is in fact our mission statement ‘At the Dean we are committed to the growth and development of young people’, brought to life on the football fields and handball alleys of Ireland”.
Past pupil and 3 times All Ireland winner, Conor Gormley was the guest speaker of the night. Conor’s family association within the Dean stretches back to his grandfather Packie, groundsman at the Dean and his father Sean who was on the Dean team which captured the first football title ever won at the school.
School Principal Mr Warnock spoke of his immense pride of the pupils’ achievements and thanked his staff who coach’ the individuals and teams. There is no doubt that the abundance of talent in the Dean will ensure future sporting successes.
‘Meet our townlands’ Exhibition
The History Department in Dean Maguirc College has been fortunate enough to have on loan the recent ‘Meet Our Townlands’ Exhibition produced by Termonmaguirc Historical Society. Links between the society and the Dean stretch right back to 1994 when Sheila Mc Aleer from the society presented a plaque to the school for the top GCSE student which has been awarded annually since.
Exhibited in the foyer of the school the exhibition presented an opportunity for pupils and parents to capture the information on the display boards and some interesting connections with present pupils have emerged.
The Dean would like to take this opportunity to thank the Termonmaguirc Historical Society for allowing the exhibition to go on tour. It has played its part in raising awareness amongst pupils of their townlands and the importance of preserving not only their names but the history within them.

Holocaust Survivor Talk

dents were fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to attend a Holocaust survivor talk in Sacred Heart College College, Omagh yesterday. Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental was 9 years old when the camp he was being held in (Bergen-Belsen) was liberated. He has been living in Dublin since the 1950s and came to Sacred Heart to give a talk and then to run a Q &A session. The event was filmed by The Holocaust Memorial Trust.
Dean Maguirc College History Department extends it thanks to Mr Owen Devine, Scared Heart College, for his invitation to the event and would like to congratulate him on having the foresight to run such an event. The teachers and pupils found the talk both emotional and harrowing. Oral evidence from a survivor brought the horror of the Holocaust home to all in attendance.
